The Great American Smoke Out...

bxp64633_DID-YOU-KNOW_putting-out-cigeratte_72ppi_355x129_pngPretty much everyone now knows that even occasional smokers are at higher risk of developing lung cancer, emphysema, and many other diseases.  We also now know that second-hand smoke can harm your family and friends.  If you're a smoker, why not make November 18th your Stop Smoking Day?  

The biggest reason that it’s difficult to give up smoking is the nicotine.  It used to be that if you wanted to break your nicotine addiction, you had to do it cold turkey.  Now there a range of products designed to help wean you off nicotine slowly.  You may benefit from over-the-counter medicines like the patch or gum.  If you’ve tried these methods and they just don’t work for you, you may be able to get medicines from your doctor to help you on your way. 

For many people, smoking isn’t just about being addicted to nicotine.  Many people give up on quitting not only due to the withdrawal, but also because they need to have something to do with their mouth and hands.  Picking up a cigarette and putting it in their mouth just gives them something to do.  This is another reason many people gain weight when they quit smoking, because they eat to get something in their mouth.  If this is a struggle for you, try something that keeps your mouth and hands occupied, like eating sunflower seeds or getting a rubix cube to keep your hands busy.  If you really need the feel of a cigarette, why not try the candy variety for a while?

If smoking also carries a social benefit, the best thing you can do is get your friends to quit with you.  Instead of going out to smoke on your break, convince your friends to go for short walks around the building with you, or hang out at the water cooler or coffee pot instead. 

While most people know about products and medicines to help you quit, many are still unaware of all the other quitting resources available.  A quick online search will help you find chat rooms, quitting support phone lines, and all other kinds of resources.  You can access others who are trying to quit and support each other, or talk to experts who can help you figure out why you smoke and what the best method of quitting is for you. 

While it will definitely take time, willpower, and possibly several tries, you can quit smoking.  Just remember to use all the resources around you and lean on friends and family for support.  Once you've quit, you’ll not only feel accomplished, but you’ll be leading a much healthier life.
